Ribbon cut, rooftop ready: Drifter Byron Bay officially opens its doors
The launch event welcomed 250 guests and marked the official debut of a property that has been open since early September and is already performing strongly with travellers.
Byron Bay has welcomed a bold new player to its accommodation scene, with Drifter Byron Bay officially opening its doors last Thursday, November 20, at a launch event that drew 250 guests, partners and industry figures.
The celebration marked the first Australian opening for the Drifter brand. Guests were treated to a night of local flavour and fun, complete with catering from Three Blue Ducks, complimentary tattoos from Byron studio Polemi, and a DJ set by Benny and the Sets.

The property has been operating since early September and is already resonating strongly with travellers. Drifter reports it is on track for more than 80 percent occupancy across November and December, with a guest mix of approximately 60 percent international and 40 percent domestic. Key international markets include the UK, Denmark, France, Germany and the US, and the average stay sits at 4.2 nights.
A new era of hybrid accommodation in the heart of Byron
Tucked away on Lateen Lane and moments from Byron’s iconic beaches, Drifter Byron Bay brings a fresh take on social, design-driven accommodation. The 52-room, 260-bed property blends shared suites for sociable travellers and groups with curated private suites for those seeking a more personal retreat. Impressively, 49 of the 52 rooms feature balconies overlooking the new rooftop pool and lush outdoor spaces.
In true Drifter style, the venue is designed around connection and community. Guests can join a rotating schedule of free experiences, including Disco Drifter, The Cook Up (a family-style meal prepared by the Drifter team), and Drifter Fit Check, which features a mix of run clubs, beach yoga and other wellbeing sessions.

Drifter Byron Bay offers a wide spectrum of accommodation types, including:

Part of a fast-growing Australasian network
The Byron Bay opening expands Drifter’s network to eleven properties across Australia and New Zealand, joining the flagship Drifter Christchurch hybrid hotel and Little Drifter hostels in Bondi Beach, Surry Hills, Glebe, Canberra, Melbourne CBD and North Melbourne. Further expansion is already in motion, with Drifter Melbourne, Drifter Wellington and Drifter Auckland slated to open in 2026.
