The world-famous Cardrona Hotel will remain proudly in New Zealand hands, following its sale to a group of Kiwi investors for an undisclosed sum.

The 162-year-old heritage-listed property, one of the country’s most photographed hotels, has been purchased by a consortium of local investors with strong ties to Central Otago. The new owners, who prefer to stay out of the spotlight, will officially take over on November 3.

The hotel and restaurant will be run by experienced hospitality executive Warren Barclay, who has lived in Wānaka for the past four years. Barclay owns Experience Group, which delivers hospitality services for major sporting fixtures and events, but says he’ll be stepping back from day-to-day operations there to focus on his new role as publican.

Barclay said the ownership group has a deep respect for the Cardrona Hotel’s heritage and a long-term vision to ensure its continued success.

“We’re incredibly proud to take on the stewardship of such a special part of New Zealand’s story,” Barclay said. “The Cardrona Hotel holds a unique place in the hearts of so many, and we’re committed to preserving its heritage while exploring thoughtful ways to enhance its boutique accommodation, dining, event offerings and overall guest experience.”

He added that the purchase reflects continued confidence in the Southern Lakes region as a premier tourism and lifestyle destination.

“The hotel’s strong trading performance, year-round visitor appeal and iconic status made it a highly sought-after opportunity in the hospitality market.”

Outgoing owner Cade Thornton, who has managed the hotel for the past 13 years, expressed his gratitude to the local community and guests for their long-standing support.

“It’s been an honour to be part of the Cardrona Hotel’s legacy,” Thornton said. “We’re delighted to see it passed on to passionate new custodians who share a love for the region and its heritage.”

Thornton first announced plans for the private sale in July, sparking significant national and international interest. During the six-week campaign, enquiries came from potential buyers in New Zealand, Australia, the United States and Singapore.

The hotel’s Trade Me Property listing became one of the site’s most-viewed of 2025, attracting more than 130,000 views in just five weeks.

Thornton will remain involved during a short transition period before taking an extended family holiday around Australia next year. He, wife Alexis and their two children plan to continue living in the Cardrona Valley.

Barclay confirmed the hotel will continue operating as usual, with no immediate changes to staffing or services.

“Our focus is on continuity and care—ensuring the Cardrona Hotel continues to welcome guests with the same warmth and charm it’s known for.”
