Whakarite Whenua Ceremony marks new chapter for Blenheim’s riverside: Construction begins on The Alfred Hotel

The hotel will feature 123 rooms and form part of a vibrant new hospitality and entertainment precinct on the banks of the Taylor River.

A traditional blessing sets the stage for a landmark 123-room hotel development on the Taylor River.

Blenheim’s riverside precinct is set to transform with the commencement of construction on The Alfred Hotel, following a whakarite whenua ceremony held on Friday, October 17, beside the former Marlborough Club site on Alfred Street.

The ceremony, led by representatives from Te Rūnanga a Rangitāne o Wairau, Dr Peter Meihana and Kiley Nepia, marked an important milestone for developer Chris Thornley and his partners Nic Smith and Lenny O’Connell of Alfred Taylor Development. The blessing honoured the cultural and spiritual significance of the site and set the intention for how all involved will interact with and care for the whenua throughout construction.

“This blessing marks an important milestone as we begin construction on The Alfred Hotel,” said developer Chris Thornley. “It was a meaningful way to honour this land and set the right foundation for this significant development. The Alfred Hotel represents our commitment to creating an exceptional riverside destination that will enhance Blenheim’s tourism offering and showcase the best of Marlborough to local and international visitors.”

Rising six storeys on the banks of the Taylor River, The Alfred Hotel will feature 123 rooms and form part of a vibrant new hospitality and entertainment precinct alongside the ASB Theatre, Wine + Food Experience Marlborough, and the Marlborough Events Centre.

Scheduled to open in 2027, the hotel will be managed by Capstone Hotel Management and is expected to become a cornerstone of Blenheim’s tourism and business landscape, providing modern accommodation and a welcoming space for both leisure and corporate travellers.

The project signifies not only an investment in local tourism infrastructure but also a recognition of Blenheim’s growing reputation as a destination for world-class hospitality experiences.
