Fourth Art Series Honours Indigenous Artist

One of the most distinguished Aboriginal artists, Tommy Watson, will join three of Australia’s greatest living artists in having Art Series hotels named after them.

The Watson will open in Adelaide in September 2013 joining Melbourne’s The Cullen, The Olsen and The Blackman.

The announcement was made in Melbourne this week with Mr Watson and fellow artist John Olsen in the latter’s namesake hotel, The Olsen in Chapel St.

The Watson is to be built in nine storeys on the River Torrens in Walkerville and will have 420 living areas including 270 apartments and 50 to 60 five-star hotel rooms. It will have restaurants, a commercial business centre, an artist-in-residence studio, a pool and health-recreational areas.

As with the other Art Series hotels, The Watson will showcase works from the artist throughout the rooms and public areas. Guests will also be given the art-inspired experience of an in-house art curator plus an art channel on the television and an art library in every suite.

“We always wanted to include an indigenous artist in the Art Series Hotel Group and [we] are delighted to have such a preeminent indigenous artist in our fold to celebrate and educate our guests about this important aspect of artistic expression in Australia,” said Art Series CEO Will Deague.

Tommy Watson, born around 1935, is one of Australia’s best known and collectable indigenous artists and was one of the founding artists of the Irrunytju art centre.

In 2005 he was commissioned to produce artwork to be permanently installed in the Musee du Quai Branly in Paris, France.
