Providers to have the right to evict

Changes to the Anti-Discrimination Act introduced to state parliament last week by attorney-general Jarrod Bleijie will give accommodation providers the right to evict people believed to be providing sexual services in their properties.

“The changes will mean business owners can refuse a sex worker accommodation or evict them if they have reason to believe they are operating a business from their premises,” said Mr Bleijie.

He said this would correct a discrepancy that existed between the anti-discrimination legislation and Liquor Act that rules an accommodation provider is prohibited from allowing someone to operate a private business from their premises.

In August the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal ruled that the owners of a motel in Moranbah breached the Anti-Discrimination Act by refusing accommodation to a prostitute who is now suing for compensation.

“If someone is running a business out of a hotel or motel room and the operator or manager receives complaints from other patrons they should be able to do something,” said Mr Bleijie. “It is about levelling the playing field so the laws suit the majority not the minority.”
Presumably the “a business” label implies any sort of business?
