Time for Gillard and opposition to clarify policies

Queensland’s top strata professionals are calling on both the Gillard government and the federal opposition to provide early release of policies that impact on the multi-billion dollar strata industry.

Strata industry stakeholders will descend on Novotel Twin Waters this week [6-8 March] for what is tipped to be the most important strata industry conference in years.

Strata Community Australia (Qld)’s annual symposium event will be attended by over 100 professionals from Queensland’s $86 billion strata industry, including unit owners, body corporate managers and industry associates.

Simon Barnard, president of SCA (Qld) believes this year’s event is the most important in years and will be crucial to the future of the industry. “Our industry wants to see what plans and policies both the Gillard government and the federal opposition have to protect and advance our industry against more red tape. It’s time for the Labor Party and coalition to start putting their plans on the table.

“With approximately 25% of the state’s population living in strata schemes and more than 3 million people nationally, the government and the opposition need to ensure that the processes and laws involved in managing and maintaining strata buildings are effective and up to date. It would also be useful if they listen and act on recommendations made by professional managers in the strata industry.

“Queensland’s strata industry has faced a number of hurdles over the past few years, including the GFC and natural disasters such as two major floods but we have come through with fast response and little disruption to those living and working in strata.

“This year’s conference is about building on what we have achieved so far and planning for the future,” Mr Barnard said.

The conference sessions will be delivered by industry experts and cover a range of topics including complying with state strata legislation; risk management and mitigation; financial planning; ethics; and building strong businesses.

“SCA (Qld) members manage property worth an estimated replacement value of $86 billion, so this kind of event is important to ensure we keep developing our skill sets and looking at ways to improve the industry. We’ve put a lot of time into our advocacy work and raising professional standards in the industry over the past 18 months.

“We’re positive that 2013 will be another great year for SCA (Qld) and our symposium is just the start,” Mr Barnard said.
