Hope is on the horizon says accom industry body

Praise comes for the NSW government as it eases more COVID-19 restrictions. The state tourism accommodation body warmly welcomed the further lifting of COVID-19 restrictions from 1 July.

TAA NSW CEO Michael Johnson declared it will make a “real difference” for many hotels. The loosening of restrictions on how many people will be allowed into functions, as well as sporting and cultural events, would be a game changer for the struggling accommodation sector.

He said: “Many hotels are actually still holding conference bookings for July. Thanks to the NSW Government’s weekend announcement, a number of these conferences will now be green-lighted with a COVID-safe checklist plan in place to ensure social distancing and robust hygiene and cleaning protocols occur.

“The move follows strong representations from TAA to the State Government.

“The changes will finally give our industry the chance to holding meetings and business events – albeit under the 4sq metre ruling.”

Mr Johnson said accommodation hotels have been operating at sub-20 percent occupancies for many months now.

“Opening up sporting and cultural events to 25 percent of normal capacity from 1 July is the first step in creating the much needed drivers which will finally attract customers back into our venues,” he said.

He also thanked the Premier Gladys Berejiklian and the NSW Government for the new measures.

The good news for NSW Accom industry came alongside the recent launch of the Destination NSW recent campaign 213 Ways to Reboot 2020 in NSW. Supporting a tourism recovery, Now’s The Time to Love NSW, list of 213 NSW travel adventures depicts an array of diverse and unique experiences across the state.

“The end of travel restrictions in NSW signals the start of an important new chapter for us to get out there and love NSW once again, to visit as many of the incredible towns, sights and experiences that the state offers,” said Steve Cox, Chief Executive Officer, Destination NSW.
