Little National Sydney now officially open after challenging transformation

Canberra based DOMA Group is bringing their own touch of understated sophistication to Sydney with their latest property, Little National Sydney.

DOMA is recognised as one of the largest investment and development companies also private hoteliers in the ACT. It owns and operates all of its hotel operations including food and beverage facilities and has recently expanded into New South Wales with a significant presence in Newcastle, now it presents a unique and sophisticated hotel offering in Sydney CBD.

The 12-storey hotel above the Clarence Street entry to Wynyard Station is centred between Barangaroo, Bridge Street and Martin Place and provides 230 luxurious rooms, a guest gym, sprawling library and exclusive rooftop lounge and bar. The east face of the Little National is home to a vertical garden, featuring an array of screening plants carefully selected to adapt to the conditions at each height of the building.

For the property, DOMA Group enlisted renowned architecture and interior design firm, Bates Smart to create a modern approach to accommodation at Little National Sydney.

While the property draws inspiration from its inner-city location, the compact, urban site provided a new set of challenges for the Bates Smart design team. Placed directly on top of transport infrastructure, the building is supported via a steel frame structure; a structural engineering method rarely used in Australia. The exterior features a simple linear form with soft curved corners, creating a seamless connection with outside. Horizontal bands double as sunshades, a subtle nod to the previous transport house, harmonising with the heritage context of the building.

“We are so pleased to have crafted the Little National Sydney for DOMA,” says designer Hayden Crawford, who led the Bates Smart interior design team. “It’s a fresh and exciting offer for Sydney – especially the rooftop, which will be a destination like no other in the city. It still feels like a Little National hotel, but it creates an oasis in Sydney’s dense urban landscape.”
