New facilities for Northern Territory tourism

Government grants have funded nine Roadhouse to Recovery projects.

As many Australian tourism and hospitality businesses struggle through continued lockdowns and COVID-19 restrictions, nine new projects have been completed in the Top End.

Northern Territory tourism is enjoying a welcome boost, with nine projects completed at part of the Labor government’s $4 million Roadhouse to Recovery grant initiative. Still more projects are nearing the final stages.

Designed to breathe life back into the tourism sector, the grants have funded a range of upgrades and construction projects to improve the Northern Territory tourism landscape. So far, $2.26 million has been paid out.

“When it comes to exploring the Territory, we want tourists and locals to hit the road,” said Chief Minister Michael Gunner. “The drive tourism market is so important for our economy and for supporting local jobs.”

Funding has also been allocated to build roadside tourism facilities, helping to promote road travel in the Northern Territory.

“We want visitors and locals to remember the great roadside facilities we have here in the Territory and to pass on those recommendations to others who are thinking of passing through,” Minister for Tourism and Hospitality Natasha Fyles said.

Among the new projects, Corroboree Park Tavern has used a $150,000 grant to build new guest cabins and instal additional lighting and power solutions onsite.

Owner Peter Shappert said: “We’re looking forward to welcoming guests into our new cabins this weekend, with the place booked out for the Secret Women’s Business fishing competition.”

Other completed projects are at Banyan Farm, Daly River Inn, Hi-Way Inn Daly Waters and Point Stuart Wilderness Lodge NT. In Central Australia, completed projects include Banka Banka West Station and Tourist Park, Tilmouth Well Roadhouse, Threeways Roadhouse, Ti Tree Farm Garden and Ti Tree Food Barn.

As well as supporting Territory tourism, the grant program has also been a boost for the construction industry, and an additional $4 million is set to fund a second round of grants.
