Suffering Sydney desperate for corporate market return

Public health order revision to help kickstart CBD revival

Addressing a key summit focusing on how to revitalise the Sydney CBD in response to the impacts of COVID-19, Tourism Accommodation Australia (TAA) CEO, Michael Johnson said the hospitality and accommodation industry will continue to suffer until the corporate market returns.

However, Mr Johnson said he was pleased by the NSW Government’s plans to revise its current public health order which is intended to see more office workers return to the CBD and welcomed recommendations for a campaign designed to promote Sydney as a great place to work and play.

The TAA CEO was addressing delegates at the ‘Kick-starting Sydney: Recapturing the energy of Sydney’s CBD’ summit’, hosted by NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet.

Attendees included several members of the NSW Cabinet, government bodies, business and industry groups across a range of sectors, including hospitality and accommodation.

Mr Johnson said the summit provided a great opportunity to ”review where we have come from and what is critical in the short term to drive vibrancy and profitability back into the Sydney CBD.

“It was a perfect forum for open discussions around issues such as removing unnecessary restrictions and increasing both leisure and corporate tourism for accommodation providers,” he said.

“We look forward to seeing outcomes of the summit including the government’s upcoming revised public health order and the recommendations of a campaign to promote our city as a great place to work and play.”

Mr Johnson acknowledged the participation of the Premier, Treasurer and members of the NSW Cabinet who attended the summit, calling it a great sign of collaboration between government, industry, and business.
