Visitors are greeted by a breathtaking array of locally made artworks, each piece thoughtfully curated to celebrate both the history of the GPO and the natural beauty of South Australia.
The hotel’s interior spaces—spanning 285 guest rooms, two contemporary dining venues, and extensive meeting and event areas—are adorned with works that tell a visual story of the region’s diverse culture and history.
Among the standout features is Jason Porter’s striking multi-panel screen artwork in the entrance lobby, paying homage to Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre National Park, a key landmark along the historic Overland Telegraph Line route. At the reception, Sandra Punami’s vibrant canvases, titled Maku Tjukurpa, depict the rich cultural heritage of the Mimili community where she was raised, offering guests a profound connection to the land and its stories.
The hotel’s commitment to showcasing local talent extends to its dining and lounge areas. The Lounge Lobby features monumental copper wall sculptures by Karl Meyer and Warren Pickering, inspired by the pneumatic tubes once used in Adelaide’s postal system.
Meanwhile, in the Lobby Bar, Pickering’s Nexus sculpture, crafted from white cypress, evokes the enduring legacy of the Overland Telegraph poles that once connected Australia to the world.
Penny Blue, the hotel’s restaurant, offers more than just exquisite cuisine; it also presents a curated wall of 44 archival photographs from the State Library of South Australia, celebrating the people and stories of the Adelaide GPO, including the legendary Sir Charles Todd, who oversaw the construction of the Overland Telegraph Line.
Adding to the hotel’s rich artistic tapestry are pieces by other renowned South Australian artists, including intricate ceramic works by Letitia Downes and Shane Connery, as well as aerial photography by Jason Porter, capturing the GPO’s unique Renaissance Revival architecture.
This exceptional collection of art not only enhances the aesthetic of the Adelaide Marriott Hotel but also serves as a tribute to South Australia’s vibrant creative community and the historical significance of the GPO building. As the newest addition to Adelaide’s hospitality landscape, the Adelaide Marriott Hotel offers guests an immersive experience that is as culturally enriching as it is luxurious.
