Hiring for fit, not familiarity: the new motel recruitment mindset
Op-Ed: Dianne Collie from motelsos.com warns—personal connections alone won’t build the strong motel teams you need.

Recruitment isn’t just a box to tick. It is one of the most important investments a motel can make.
In the motel industry, personal relationships when recruiting have long been valued—and rightly so. The long hours, the hands-on nature of the work, and the need for absolute trust mean that personal connections have often played a big role in how teams are formed.
However, when things get chaotic, when systems go down, or when the unexpected strikes (and it always does), it is not your connection to someone that keeps things running. It is their ability to step up, solve problems, and lead with confidence.
Over time, one quiet truth has become increasingly clear: just knowing someone isn’t the same as knowing they are the right person (or couple) for a management role.
Whether you are managing a 12-room roadside stopover or a 50-room regional property, recruitment today is no longer just about filling a vacancy with someone familiar. It is about finding people who are skilled, knowledgeable, and aligned with you as the owner or lessee, with your guests, and with the culture of your property.
The changing landscape
Guest expectations are rising. Today’s guests want hotel-style service with motel-style convenience, and that is no small ask.
At the same time, compliance requirements, digital systems, and operational complexity have increased. The job of a motel manager (or management couple) has never been more demanding.
With these shifts comes a clear need: a recruitment approach that prioritises capability over connection.
When ‘who you know’ isn’t enough
Hiring someone you know, or someone who comes ‘highly recommended’, can feel reassuring. But that sense of safety can sometimes be misleading.
Here are some reasons why:
- Gaps in skills or experience may be overlooked, familiarity can cloud objectivity
- Expectations or cultural fit may be mismatched leading to tension, confusion, or early exits
- Team dynamics may suffer, especially if the individual isn’t the right operational or personality fit
On the other hand, even a simple, structured recruitment process helps ensure you are hiring based on skills, mindset, and cultural fit not just familiarity. It is not about ticking boxes. It is about making sure the person or couple joining your team actually strengthens it.
Rethinking the recruitment mindset
Most motels don’t have the luxury of long recruitment campaigns or in-house HR department. However, that doesn’t mean we should fall back on informal hires or word-of-mouth alone.
Instead, we need to ask:
- What does this role really require?
- What kind of person (or couple) will fit our workplace culture?
- Does this applicant have the skills, temperament, and drive to lead and adapt?
When we approach hiring with intention rather than assumption, we protect the business, improve staff retention, and ultimately create a better guest experience.
The bottom line?
In a people-first industry like motelling, relationships matter. But when it comes to recruitment, doing it right matters more.
