Rumi on Louth gains green light for major luxury island expansion
Projects designed to complement the natural environment rather than compete with it.
South Australia’s award-winning island resort Rumi on Louth has received approval for a multimillion-dollar expansion, paving the way for 22 new ocean-view cabins and a suite of luxury wellness and recreation amenities.
The development will grow the resort’s capacity beyond its existing five suites and eight-bedroom private residence, creating new opportunities for high-end travellers seeking exclusive, sustainable experiences off the coast of Port Lincoln.

Founder Che Metcalfe said the approval followed months of consultation with planning and environmental authorities.
“We’re excited to expand Rumi with even more opportunities for guests to enjoy this special place,” Metcalfe said. “From day one, we’ve prioritised sustainability in every aspect of our operations, and this next phase will be no exception.”
Construction tenders are now open, with builder submissions due within weeks. The first cabins are expected to open by the end of 2025, with full completion slated for early 2026.

Sustainable luxury at scale
Rumi on Louth operates entirely off-grid, powered by solar energy and supported by its own desalination plant, underscoring its commitment to environmental conservation and minimal impact development.
The island’s 135-hectare landscape has been carefully restored and protected, with future projects designed to complement the natural environment rather than compete with it.

New experiences on the horizon
The expansion will introduce a range of guest experiences designed to elevate the resort’s “barefoot luxury” ethos, including:
-
Communal ocean-view hot tubs
-
Tennis courts and new walking trails
-
A Japanese onsen-style spa offering traditional bathing and relaxation rituals
-
SomaOS, an AI-powered guest experience system for booking dining, activities, and identifying local flora and fauna
-
Shio, a fine-dining Japanese restaurant overlooking the coastline
These additions will complement Rumi’s Good Food Guide Chef-Hatted Samphire restaurant, helmed by Executive Chef Jono Sweet, and its growing reputation as one of Australia’s most desirable destination wedding venues.

A destination for indulgence and connection
Rumi on Louth has become synonymous with seclusion and sophistication, attracting couples, wellness seekers, and adventure travellers alike. Guests can choose from paddleboarding, catamaran cruises, kayak fishing, or simply relax in privacy among untouched natural surrounds.

With the resort’s expansion underway, Metcalfe said the vision for Rumi remains unchanged: “Our goal has always been to deliver an experience that celebrates nature, nurtures wellbeing, and redefines what off-grid luxury can look like.”
