Chris Trethowan is not scared of a bit of hard work. In fact, he embraces it.
A few years ago, Chris owned and ran two management rights properties on the Esplanade in Cairns. After selling off one, he took over the lease of the newly renovated – and at the time, unnamed – Discovery Cairns. When he took over the lease, the large motel was nothing but an empty shell.
While managing his other management rights property, Chris coordinated a complete fit-out of the motel. He then sold his two management rights, named the new motel Discovery Cairns and has spent the past three and a half years establishing it as one of the most prominent motels in northern Queensland. And it certainly is.
Today, Discovery Cairns boasts 53 rooms, a restaurant, two swimming pools and over 20 staff.
Chris said it was this high level of staff and other traditional motel aspects that were an initial shock having come from management rights. But this change was only brief for Chris comes from a family of seasoned moteliers. His family had caravan parks and motels in Victoria and ever since he was 15, he has actively been involved in the operations.
Chris’ passion is for the industry, the love of his job and the fact he isn’t daunted by a little hard work has Chris considering taking on another property.
Motel magic
Discovery Cairns, on Lake St, is conveniently and centrally located within 500m of Cairns’ CBD and a short stroll from Cairns Esplanade.
The motel boasts 53 rooms in three styles: standard queen; twin and superior. Each room features all the mod cons expected such as private bathroom, hairdryer, bathtub, writing desk, in-room safe, wireless broadband, colour television, tea and coffee making facilities, air conditioning, ceiling fans, half size fridge, queen sized beds and pay television.
In the complex, facilities include two large and attractively landscaped saltwater swimming pools (one with a waterfall and the other suitable for laps), fully-equipped guest laundry, tour desk and onsite restaurant and bar.
Ristorante Rimini is open seven days serving succulent traditional style Italian meals prepared by passionate chefs using the freshest quality ingredients.
