San Mateo Apartments

“I just love it. I feel like I am on holiday full time.”

This was how Jan Gillmartin described her job, as manager of Broadbeach’s San Mateo Apartments. Jan and her partner, Jim Welsh purchased the management rights for the property a little over three months ago after being patiently assisted by the Property Pacific team for just on 12 months. They travelled up the coast from down at the foot of the Victorian ski fields where Jan and Jim owned five holiday apartments on three large, treed blocks of land in beautiful Bright.

Both Jan and Jim have had extensive experience in the industry with Jan spending 13 years in property management controlling a large rent roll of 1500 properties in Wodonga. Jim meanwhile, has managed numerous motels, caravan parks and ski lodges.

“Our progression into management rights was a natural one. With my background in real estate and Jim’s in the accommodation industry, they both married perfectly,” Jan said.

Jan said they chose San Mateo because it ticked all the boxes.

“The management rights industry in Queensland is so well structured as opposed to NSW and Vic. It is certainly filtering southwards but it isn’t as structured as it is here. So we knew we wanted something in Queensland on the coast, near the beach and San Mateo offered that location plus it was a really good business.”

Jan and Jim are thinking of a five-year plan but have no desires to change anything.

“It was such a well run business when we bought it why change anything?”

They are planning however to add a few more services such as a bike, boogie board and to promote Ticketmates more extensively.

Built in 2000, San Mateo features 29 one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments, sub-penthouses and penthouse units across nine storeys.

Each apartment is Mediterranean styled, fully self-contained with cable television, kitchen with stainless steel appliances, laundry with washing machine and clothes drier and boast ocean or pool views. The two bedroom apartments are popular with families and consist of a master bedroom with queen size beds and a second bedroom with two single beds. There is also an additional toilet/vanity and laundry.

The penthouse apartments are each two storey apartments with powder room, en suite, full bathroom and laundry. The sub-penthouses have two separate bedrooms, two bathrooms and an additional living/bedroom area with a sofa bed. The sub-penthouses have a very spacious living area.

In the grounds, guests can enjoy the heated pool and spa and the poolside BBQ entertaining area. A walk across to the beach is just 40m for those who prefer to sea swim.
