Refurbs liven up Port Douglas

The elevation of the Rydges Sabaya Resort in Port Douglas is to move to to five-star status with a $6 million refit.

Coupled with the $10 million transformation of the old Treetops resort, due for completion in May, into the new Ramada with access to the Wyndam Group’s vacation club membership will begin a new era in the coastal town’s tourism.

The big vision redevelopment of the Marriner Group’s Sheraton Mirage Resort is still being finalised.

Sheraton general manager Lachlan Walker said, “Things are definitely progressing and we are expecting 2012 to be a very exciting year.”

On Flagstaff Hill, a set of six units, to be built on the site of an old quarry overlooking Four Mile Beach, has been approved by Cairns Regional Council. The project is before the courts with objections from neighbouring properties and possible complications caused by a road closure also holding up work.

Near Four Mile Beach, the Tiani Gardens refurbishment of a block of 12 units has started while further afield at Cooya Beach, the Cooya Beach Aquaculture Resort facility is set for completion by March.
