Blue Lagoon Resort

Blue Lagoon Resort is a tropical dream come true. Located at Trinity beach in far north Queensland, the 4½-star lagoon-front resort is a truly spectacular holiday destination.

Built in 2006, the property offers a range of accommodation options to suit all tastes and budgets. Spread over nine buildings, some with lift access, the resort has a feeling of spaciousness, surrounded by tropical gardens.

Robert and Caroline Willemse and Dani Kuhl have been managing Blue Lagoon since November last year and say they were attracted to the property not only because it was modern with a tropical low rise layout but by the its picturesque and unique location.

“Blue Lagoon’s location is perfect whether you are on a family holiday or a honeymoon vacation. Palm-fringed Trinity Beach has a unique village atmosphere offering a host of services and facilities. And just 20 minutes drive to Cairns or 40 minutes north to Port Douglas, its location provides easy access to a multitude of tourist attractions,” says Caroline. “We were attracted to the tranquil nature of the resort, set around a beautiful lagoon with a rainforest backdrop. The wildlife is abundant on the lagoon and there are ever changing views over the water from sunrise to sunset. We were also impressed by the many facilities the resort has to offer, meaning that guests can enjoy a complete holiday experience.”

Robert and Caroline had previously owned management rights at Trinity Beach, in partnership with another couple. Having sold their share of the business in 2007, they travelled Australia for six months before returning to Cairns. They had no plans to return to management rights and instead concentrated on building a house on a lagoon front block in the residential estate of the development. When the opportunity arose to buy the management rights of the resort, they decided to take the plunge again.

Dani previously worked in logistics and has a wide range of skills that meant she was ideally suited to the running of a large holiday resort. Caroline, who had continued to work in the industry, welcomed the opportunity to be involved in their own family operated business. “We are very strong on excellent customer service and make every effort to ensure our guests take away only happy memories of their stay at Blue Lagoon,” says Caroline.

Despite being a relatively new building, the new management team have already made some upgrades to the resort facilities and have a number of future developments in the pipeline.

“After upgrading 90 plus televisions, we plan to put into place a program of planned maintenance and refurbishment. On the marketing front, our first step will be to update the website and promote packages in conjunction with local tour and business operators. We have also continued with the professional services of Parker Travel, who have been marketing the property from the beginning.

“We are passionate about Trinity Beach as a destination, and will do what we can to promote the area at home and overseas,” said Robert who has reignited his involvement with Trinity Beach Promotion Association. “It is very frustrating the amount of negative media coverage that is focussed on the far north, particularly in relation to weather reporting. We had overseas guests comment recently that they had only booked for a four day stay in the far north because they heard the weather was always bad at this time of year,” he said

“For our owners, the disproportionate rise in the cost of strata titled building insurance has dealt another blow. This is particularly difficult for unit owners faced with spiralling costs during a period of reduced tourist numbers due to the GFC.

“However, despite these issues, we have been buoyed by a busy Christmas and New Year period, followed by a very steady January and a good amount of forward bookings. This along with the positive feedback we have received from guests means we are optimistic for the future and feel we have the right amount of skills and dedication to make Blue Lagoon Resort, a must stay destination,” Robert added.
