DestinationQ to Meet in Cairns

Cairns will host the inaugural DestinationQ industry forum to boost the state’s tourism industry, according to premier Campbell Newman, who had promised in the election build up that the forum would be held “in the first 100 days of government”.

Around 500 industry decision-makers are expected invited to the forum, which Mr Newman promises will not be like the “talkfests” of the past.

“This forum will see industry leaders and operators gather with key ministers, councils and senior officials to determine an action plan for the tourism industry in Queensland,” Mr Newman said. “Participants from all over the state will come together in Cairns to focus on what needs to be done to kick start the tourism industry in the short, medium and longer term.”

“The goal of DestinationQ will also be to reduce red tape and bureaucratic log jams and will review programs and set key targets for the following year.

“DestinationQ is a vital part of my government’s target to grow overnight visitor spending in Queensland to $30 billion per year by 2020,” Mr Newman said.

Mr Newman said further details of the DestinationQ industry forum will be announced in the coming weeks. He said the agenda was still being worked out but it would be a priority to overhaul the way destinations such as Cairns are sold interstate and overseas.

“There’s a fundamental problem with the way that we’re promoting Queensland; we need to deal with that,” he said.
