MoU reinforces accommodation industry commitment

The Accommodation Association of Australia has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Office of the Fair Work Ombudsman.

“This is a significant act for the association, our industry and Australia’s economy,” said the association’s chief executive officer, Richard Munro. “The MoU benefits both parties by opening up a channel of communication that will lower the complexity of compliance for accommodation businesses, and therefore reduce the enforcement burden on the Fair Work Ombudsman.

“Tourism, and one of its major components, the accommodation industry, are vital growth sectors for Australia’s economy, with total industry contribution reaching $19 billion in 2011-12 alone, representing 6 per cent of Australia’s gross domestic product. The association recognises the enormous contribution of accommodation and tourism to Australia’s economy and is constantly working to ensure it can continue to thrive. This new MoU is one measure than will help us achieve our goal.

“The framework around this memorandum of understanding will work to improve compliance with commonwealth workplace laws, and enable accommodation companies to run business in a more collaborative and easy manner through access to employment information and the assurance of a level playing field across the industry.”
