Airbnb to face NSW regulation?

NSW planning minister Rob Stokes is to have a parliamentary inquiry into the sharing economy in the state to clear up “confusing guidelines” for renters and property owners.

The inquiry is targeting the activities of operators like Stayz, onefinestay and Airbnb – which has 10,000 listings in Sydney alone although it is technically illegal to rent out your home to short-term guests in NSW.

How the inquiry will work has not yet been released.

Unfortunately it will not encompass a major problem in illegal accommodation.

Check out a previous discussion accomnews held on the topic recently.

Councils appear to be unable to effectively deal with illegal activity. This week City of Sydney Council began investigating reports of a terrace house built for three is being rented out to 58 young students and backpackers!

The problem is that without regulation, rogue operators will continue to sprout – as we’re seeing with the influx of dodgy properties on various online platforms – its the young, naïve international tourists who are being taken advantage of.

City of Sydney investigation team has carried our more than 20 search warrants during raids in the past two months.

Many of the properties are listed on Gumtree or Facebook.
