Travel tops tax return wish list for Australians

Almost half of Australians have identified they would prefer to use their tax return to fund travel than pay off their credit cards and debts, and three in five (59 percent) would choose travel over making investments, new research from G Adventures has shown.

The new research, commissioned by leading small group tour operator G Adventures, has identified that travel is the number one thing Australians would like to spend their tax refund on.

The research found that Australians plan on spending 20 percent of their tax refund on travel, and as the average tax payer expects, in 2017, to receive a tax refund of $1,536, this equates to approximately 3.8 billion dollars in spend across the country.

With more than three quarters (76 percent) of Aussies preferring to spend their money on experiences rather than things, and almost half (47 percent) of those expecting a tax refund planning to use at least some to fund travel, it appears people are choosing to spend their money on memories rather than materials by investing in their next adventure.

Adrian Piotto, managing director of G Adventures Australia, said that they were pleased the findings confirmed what they had long suspected – that spending money on experiences and making memories was a high priority for Australians.

“In an age of consumerism, this research tells us that Australians want their hard-earned money to go to something more meaningful,” Piotto said.

“Being in the travel industry, we know the power that a life-changing travel experience can have. We want to continue helping Aussies realise their travel dreams, through adventures to some of the greatest places on earth.”

Other key findings included:

·       Travel is the number one aspect Australians would like to spend their tax return on

·       Half (48 percent) of Australians would prefer to spend their tax return on travel rather than pay off debts or credit cards

·       86 percent of Australians would prefer to spend their tax refund on travel over partying and nights out

·       59 percent of Australians would prefer to spend their tax return on travel over investing the money

The research was commissioned by G Adventures and conducted online in July, 2017 by Lonergan Research with a diverse pool of 1,037 Australians across the country. After interviewing, data was weighted to the latest population estimates sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
