Mercure Canberra turns 90

This month, AccorHotels celebrates the 90th birthday of Mercure Canberra.

A gala event, taking place on September 15, will make guests feel like they’ve stepped back in time to the 1920s with cabaret entertainment inspired by the era in which the hotel was created and a menu to match.

Originally known as the Hotel Ainslie, Mercure Canberra was built in 1927 to provide accommodation for public servants relocating to Canberra to support the transfer of the Commonwealth Parliament from Melbourne. Today, the hotel one of eight remaining government built hotels from Canberra’s first stage of development in the 1920s and is listed in the Register of the National Estate. Mercure Canberra is also historically significant for its important role in the development of North Canberra and the forging of its community identity.

Formerly Olims, the hotel today is still much loved by guests for its comfortable guest rooms and ease of access to the city centre of Canberra which is within walking distance from the hotel. The hotel features extensive gardens, comfortable areas for guests to enjoy including a lounge with a working fireplace and original features such as etched glass panelling. Mercure Canberra’s modern Australia Courtyard Restaurant and relaxed and friendly Olims Bar and Bistro are also among its signature features.
