Reminder: Kakadu is open for business in 2021
Visitors are welcome to soak up the best wet season sites with upgraded infrastructure
Kakadu National Park is looking forward to the seasonal opening of various sites across the park to visitors after a big wet season, as water levels drop and crocodile surveys near completion.
Spectacular sites including Burrungkuy (Nourlangie), Nanguluwurr and Nawurlundja are already open with visitors pouring into Kakadu to see amazing rock art sites, enjoy cultural cruises and view some of Australia’s most diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes.
Kakadu National Park’s Tourism and Visitor Services Manager Anja Toms said Kakadu is open for business and there are many key sites that visitors can come and enjoy despite seasonal and cultural closures being in place for some areas.
“We are looking forward to opening more sites as water levels recede and it’s safe to do so,” Ms Toms said. “One region we can’t wait to get open for visitors this season is Jim Jim, including majestic Jim Jim Falls and the spectacular stone country above Twin Falls.
“Work on the Jim Jim Creek crossing to allow access to these spectacular locations is imminent. This will give visitors a chance to explore the Twin Falls escarpment walk for the first time in years.
“This month the annual Taste of Kakadu festival also takes place from 28-30 May 2021 and we will be showcasing Indigenous inspired cuisine and culture for visitors.”
Meanwhile, Kakadu National Park is working productively with Kakadu’s Traditional Owners and custodians to progress infrastructure upgrades and renewal projects across the national park, as outlined in the recently released Tourism Master Plan
“Over the next couple of months, we will be providing progress updates on several infrastructure projects underway in Kakadu. These projects include upgrades to support the management of country and culture as well as projects to attract visitors to the park, such as the new Cahills Crossing viewing platforms and walking track,” Ms Toms said.
The Federal Government has recently invested $276 million to upgrade and renew Kakadu National Park infrastructure.
