Family reunions dominate Aussie travel plans this Christmas

With summer just around the corner and reflecting what appears to be a global trend, almost three-quarters of Australians (72 percent) will enjoy their Christmas holiday at home according to newly-released Tripadvisor data.

And much like the rest of the world, Christmas week seems to be the most popular week for travelling with December 27 set to be the busiest day for travel.

The final instalment of Tripadvisor’s Seasonal Travel Index for 2022, based on a combination of first party search and proprietary consumer sentiment data, reveals that globally, travel shows no signs of abating.

Despite the annual consumer price index inflation in Australia reaching its highest in more than three decades, nearly half of Aussie survey respondents (47 percent) indicated that they will be spending more on their summer vacation this year than last year.

Nearly two-thirds of Aussie respondents (59 percent) are planning to travel between 1-6 hours to get there and more than half (53 percent) will get to their destination by plane. 

 The data also shows the main purpose of Aussies and their summer trips are to reunite with family.

And where are they going?

The Tripadvisor data reveals the top trending destinations for this summer include Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Fremantle, and Launceston.

The top five experiences according to Tripadvisor include Gordon River cruising in Tasmania, Great Barrier Reef snorkelling and diving from Cairns, Whitehaven Beach catamaran cruises, Bruny Island day tours, and Whitsundays guided Jet Ski Tours.

For those are still travelling overseas over the festive  season, Singapore, Bali, Japan, Vietnam and Iceland were listed as the most popular choices.
