Op-ed: The future of travel is purpose driven

Future Property Group's David Cummins on how to elevate guest wellbeing, align with values, and influence how guests remember their stay.

People do not travel to escape life. They travel to reconnect with it.

To nature. To loved ones. To themselves.

Short stay accommodation sits at the centre of that reconnection. Operators are no longer restricted to simply providing shelter. They have the opportunity to design experiences that elevate guest wellbeing, align with travellers’ values and influence how guests remember their stay.

Across tourism and hospitality, guest expectations are evolving. Travellers are seeking more than a bed for the night. They are seeking restoration, inspiration and alignment with their lifestyle choices. This evolution is reshaping the role accommodation providers play in people’s lives and challenging operators to think far beyond rooms and rates.

When accommodation providers lead with purpose, their role becomes unmistakable. They can exist to serve guests through rest, exploration and connection. When innovation and traveller centred care are intentionally blended, a simple stay can become a meaningful and restorative journey.

Innovation in modern accommodation is the integration of design, sustainability and guest experience. It is a holistic reimagination of how accommodation is conceived, built and lived. It touches architecture, energy systems, materials, service delivery and wellness outcomes. The most innovative environments are those where every design decision works quietly in the background to enhance comfort, efficiency and environmental harmony.

Research published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology shows that exposure to natural elements within built environments significantly improves mood, cognitive function and overall satisfaction among occupants. In accommodation settings, this translates into repeat visitation and deeper brand loyalty.

Biophilia, the idea that people feel and function better when connected to nature, is becoming central to guest experience design. It reflects a deeply human instinct to seek restoration through natural environments. Accommodation can activate this connection through indoor greenery, natural ventilation, landscape views, organic materials and sensory engagement with the outdoors. These elements create spaces that feel calm, grounded and emotionally restorative.

The commercial impact is equally compelling. Research in the International Journal of Hospitality Management shows that environments incorporating daylight access, natural materials and immersive outlooks generate higher guest satisfaction and increased word of mouth recommendations. Biophilic design therefore influences not only wellbeing, but long-term commercial performance.

Technology, when intentionally aligned with design, further elevates this experience. Intelligent energy systems, automated climate optimisation and integrated guest interfaces allow accommodation to operate with greater efficiency while enhancing comfort and convenience. These systems function quietly, removing friction while improving environmental performance.

Research published in Building and Environment found that improved indoor air quality can increase cognitive performance by up to 61 percent. In short stay accommodation, this means guests sleep better, think clearer and leave more rested.

For operators, this is far more than wellness. It becomes the foundation of guest experience and brand identity. The environments created shape the emotional imprint a stay leaves behind and influences the stories travellers carry forward and share. When guests feel better, they engage more positively. Their sense of escape heightens. Reviews strengthen. Loyalty forms. Higher ratings lead to greater visibility, stronger booking confidence and increased occupancy.

A global Expedia Group Sustainable Travel Study found that up to 90 percent of travellers actively seek sustainable travel options, with growing preference for accommodation that supports local communities and social impact. Sustainability is no longer a marketing tool. It is a booking driver.

Although sustainability is increasingly shaping travel decisions, it is often misunderstood as a higher cost choice. In practice, energy efficient construction, modular systems and off grid infrastructure can reduce operating expenses substantially. This opens the door to accommodation that is both environmentally responsible and financially accessible. Solar generation, battery storage and passive thermal design lower ongoing utility costs, creating flexibility in pricing while maintaining strong guest value.

Research in Renewable Energy Journal confirms that buildings designed with passive heating and cooling strategies can reduce energy consumption by up to 40 percent. Sustainability therefore becomes an affordability enabler rather than a cost burden.

Innovation in materials is accelerating this shift. Low carbon construction systems, recycled composites and regenerative materials reduce lifecycle emissions while improving durability and maintenance outcomes. For guests, this translates into healthier interiors, cleaner air and stronger alignment with personal environmental values.

Research in organisational psychology shows that people feel more fulfilled when contributing to meaningful impact. The same principle applies to travel. When guests understand their stay supports environmental regeneration, satisfaction deepens beyond the physical experience.

This is where the experience extends beyond the stay itself. Accommodation providers who communicate sustainability initiatives with clarity and optimism create emotional connection. Guests feel they are part of something greater than a holiday. Their stay becomes a meaningful experience where connection to the local environment empowers them and leaves a lasting impression. From that connection, advocacy emerges naturally.

The result is a guest experience where innovation, wellbeing, sustainability and purpose operate as one integrated system. Moving forward, operators can continue providing standard rooms, or they can begin embracing sustainability driven, value led experiences that restore people and protect the places they visit.

When innovation enhances wellbeing and sustainability supports affordability, accommodation evolves from a place that only shelters to an environment that protects people and planet. In that evolution lies not only stronger commercial success, but a more purpose driven future for travel itself. One defined by regeneration over consumption, connection over convenience, and experiences that improve both people and planet.
