Elysium Apartments

Place of Perfect Happiness is the Greek interpretation of Elysium Apartments in far north Queensland’s internationally famous Palm Cove. To Jocelyn and Roger Greenway, who took over the management rights on September 19 2008, it is ‘paradise’.

How life can change for the better in a matter of a few years.

Roger is originally from Devon in the United Kingdom and Jocelyn from New Zealand. Their past careers have been different but their united talents and past experiences have contributed to their successful management rights business.

“I was in the transport industry and felt as though I was going nowhere fast. I was not happy. Jocelyn had been in real estate for 20 years and owned her own real estate agency for the last six of those 20 years, so she knew all about that industry,” said Roger. “I knew I wanted to get into another venture, but wasn’t sure what. Then, Jocelyn rang me one day about management rights and I said ‘what are management rights?’ and look at us now,” said Roger proudly.

In 2006 Jocelyn and Roger took over the management rights of Sunnybank Central — a permanent residential complex south of Brisbane city. When on holiday in the unique far north Queensland, Jocelyn and Roger fell in love with the stunning beauty and very laid back lifestyle of Palm Cove. Their holiday sparked their interest in running a successful holiday apartment complex.

“I always wanted to try a holiday complex and a different adventure,” said Roger. “We started looking around after our holiday here and following a lot of family discussion we sold up in Brisbane and came here as the resident managers,” said Roger.

Elysium Apartments is a family run business, with each member contributing their expertise.

Sporting self designed smart uniforms with their name and title displayed, guests always know who they are talking to at any time.

Jocelyn has a full real estate licence and is her own on-site real estate agent. “If any owner here at the complex wants their property listed, they don’t need to go to an outside agent,” said Jocelyn. “I can do all of the necessary documentation and be realistic about prices.”

Resident Managers Roger & Jocelyn Greenway

Elysium Apartments advertises several enticing wedding packages and this is where Jocelyn and Roger’s daughter, Kirsty comes in. Kirsty is a skilled wedding photographer and an innovative wedding planner as well as being the tour manager for Elysium Apartments.

Matthew, Kirsty’s husband, is the assistant manager and also helps with the cleaning and numerous other tasks.

The four-year-old twenty luxury strata Elysium holiday apartments are an easy five minute stroll from the stunning Palm Cove beach and esplanade. Guests can choose from a studio to one, two or three bedroom tastefully furnished apartments. Elysium’s updated and easy to navigate website gives the Internet visitor detailed information about the apartments as well as the many accessible attractions.

All apartments have a private balcony, security intercom, broadband Internet, free cable television and many other comforts to ensure guests have a totally enjoyable experience.

Jocelyn and Roger have certainly been busy during the last couple of years. On September 15 2010 Roger was elected as the new far north Queensland ARAMA president. Roger has been vice president of the ARAMA Cairns branch for the past year. Jocelyn is on the ARAMA social committee and is involved in various social and business functions.

“We are also involved with the Cairns Regional Tourism Association and attend most of their monthly functions. We were nominated in the top six hospitality award nominees in July 2010,” said Roger. “We try to attend as many as we can of the tour operators hosted functions and support them as well.”

Jocelyn is passionate about the value of TripAdvisor and was very excited when Elysium Apartments recently received a rating of 4½ star by its guests and therefore have been awarded a certificate of excellence by TripAdvisor for the year 2010.

Elysium has been number one on TripAdvisor for apartments in Palm Cove for close to 12 months. “When we came here we were number 11,” said Jocelyn. “That is a lot of satisfaction for us. It helps with our overall business because the majority of our guests book through our weblink on TripAdisor. We booked most of our recent overseas trip through TripAdvisor and were very happy.”

To ensure the relatively new Elysium Apartments maintain their fresh appeal, Roger organised a seven year maintenance program, through the body corporate. “This year we had the whole exterior building repainted,” said Roger. “For the next six years the contractors will wash down and repaint yearly, keeping it nice and fresh and clean.”

“We survive on tourism,” said Roger. “We are very busy from May to October and then again during the Christmas break before the wet season comes in at the end of January and then it quietens down.”

Business is a pleasure for Jocelyn and Roger. On most Sunday afternoons many of the small accommodation operators gather on the pristine Palm Cove beach and socialise — have a barbeque, a couple of drinks, have a chat and take the dog for a walk.

“We love our work,” agreed Jocelyn and Roger. “It’s a buzz meeting people from all around the world and seeing them enjoying themselves and leave with a happy smile. We like to make sure everyone is happy and has a great time.”
