Meriton on Main Beach
It was in September 2004 that longtime managers, Greg and Ian Hill from the Meriton on Main Beach were first profiled. Here we are, five years on, profiling the Meriton on Main Beach again and Greg and Ian are still the managers there.
Greg said, “I love it. I’ve been here coming up on 11 years now and I couldn’t be happier. It’s a fantastic property and a wonderful place to live.”
There is a lot of history between Greg and the Meriton on Main Beach and it all began back in 1999 when Greg started working at the property as the night manager.
“After five years as the night manager I found out the previous owners were interested in selling, so I invited my parents, Ian and Bev to get involved and we formed a partnership and purchased the property in October 2003. Having already spent five years at the resort I knew how all the systems worked so it was an easy smooth transition into full management.”
Originally from the Brunswick Heads area, Greg moved to the Gold Coast in 1994 leaving behind the Hill’s former family business – a newsagency in Murwillumbah – to peruse a career in the hospitality industry. He started out as a golf supervisor at the Royal Pines Resort before forming a cleaning business that would later lead him to Mertion on Main Beach.
While Greg left the newsagency behind, Bev and Ian carried on and after 14 years of working seven days a week, Bev and Ian decided it was time for a lifestyle change, something that was like semi-retirement but instead they ended up at Meriton on Main Beach, which Greg says is like semi-retirement.
“With a family-run business everyone is adaptable and we take time off as we need it. We do not experience the problems that some partnerships face as we have worked together as a family before. There does not have to be a set roster.”
So what has changed in the past five years since the Meriton on Main Beach was last profiled?
“Not much,” Greg laughs. “If anything, we are currently looking at getting the building repainted, there is a bit of a process to get that done. Other than that and the fact we have changed our agreements from 10 years to 25 years, nothing else has changed. Everything is as great as it has always been. These days however, I am involved with the Unit Managers Golf Days (now called Accommodation Industry Golf Series). These are very well organised golf days once a month for unit managers and everyone else involved in the accommodation industry.”
