Seamark on First

Working previously as Fastaway courier franchisees, Greg and Viv McKay spent their days going to their customers. Now the roles are reversed and they have people seeking them out as they manage the beautiful Seamark on First at Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast.

It is all new and exciting for the Sunshine Coast couple who moved just up the road from Sippy Downs to take on their first resort management position.

“It is a career change (for us) and we have always enjoyed communicating with people,” Greg said.

Greg said some of his big Fastaway clients suggested they would make good property managers. Turns out they were right. With just two months in the role they have experienced a sharp learning curve but are enjoying the challenge.

“We relished the idea of working for ourselves again and meeting new people,” Greg said.

It seems they were destined to be at Seamark on First, though as Greg explains it, they “tripped over it”.

They had originally planned to buy the management rights at a Gold Coast property but that transaction did not proceed in the end.

“Viv found the ad for Seamark in the paper,” Greg explained.

When they had originally been searching for a suitable property, Seamark on First was not available. Not going ahead with the Gold Coast property, put them in the perfect position to buy the management rights for the Mooloolaba property when it became available and allow them to stay on the Sunshine Coast.

They could both see the potential for improving the management practices at Seamark on First and this attracted them to taking on the management role at this resort. The first challenge they wanted to tackle was to bring the management standards up to a professional level. They have been pleased with the enthusiastic response from guests and the body corporate for their new management ideas for Seamark on First.

Their plans have started off simply with improvements to exteriors of the building to enhance its visual appeal and improve the level of cleanliness overall. However they can also see the potential to increase the resort’s accommodation.

“The plans we have are to increase the letting to 44 apartments and maintaining the four-star rating.”

There are currently 22 apartments in the letting pool of this five-year old property. Available are two- and three-bedroom apartments, as well as two three-bedroom penthouses in the 12 levels of accommodation at Seamark on First.

The couple enjoy the social side of the job and have been pleased with the positive feedback and interaction with their guests. “The different personalities of our guests and the conversations have both been interesting and rewarding,” Greg said.

As new property managers Greg said that he had been advised the dealing with the body corporate would be the most difficult part of the job. However, once they took on the role they discovered that this was not the case. “They are brilliant in this building,” he said.

He found the complex’s body corporate were a cross section of business people who have a clear understanding of modern business practices.

Being completely reliant on computers in all aspects of the daily management of the resort was an unexpected aspect of the role for the McKay’s. As Seamark on First was previously a Mantra complex, Greg and Viv decided to seek outside training and IT specialists in establishing a working computer system for the business and to improve their IT skills.

Like Greg and Viv, guests are drawn to Seamark on First magnificent location just one street back from Mooloolaba’s white sandy beach and tourist-friendly esplanade. Guests can wake up to the sweeping sea views from their balconies on the two- and three-bedroom apartments from level four and the penthouse apartments at the top of the twelve different levels of the resort.

All apartments offer full kitchen and laundry facilities, air-conditioning and complimentary cable television channels.

The three-bedroom apartments and penthouse have two balconies to offer both hinterland and sea views.

The spacious three-bedroom penthouse includes two levels of living and two bathrooms, one with spa. It boasts a full modern kitchen with all the desired equipment, including a bottle opener to help visitors celebrate the luxurious accommodation.

Guests can enjoy the heated pool, fully equipment gym and the convenience of a tour desk at reception.

Seamark on First is a short stroll to beautiful patrolled surfing beaches, a selection of beachfront cafes and many tempting dining options along the Esplanade. A vast range of attractions are available to visitors in the area including Underwater World which is Mooloolaba’s local draw card, one of the world largest Aquarium and Oceanarium, situated at The Wharf complex a short walking distance from the resort.
