Kiwis, Cathy and James O’Connor are the managers of Gold Coast premier holiday building, Surf Parade Resort. Having left the New Zealand six years ago – after James had spent 20 years in the New Zealand police and Cathy in retail before starting and running their own garden centre – for a permanent complex also on the Gold Coast, the O’Connor’s then embarked on an overseas working holiday before returning to Queensland’s southeast coast.
Cathy said, “We did two years here running a permanent complex before we sold that and went to England for two years where we worked and travelled. We then came back to Australia knowing we wanted to go into a holiday property but when we returned there was not a lot of good ones left so we were really lucky to find Surf Parade Resort.”
Surf Parade Resort was not actually on the market but thanks to Bruce Woods, their proactive real estate agent’s knowledge of what they wanted, he was able to find the right building and was also able to convince the owners to sell and Cathy and James’ dream came true.
Today, two-and-a-half years on since the O’Connor’s bought the management rights to the property and Cathy said, they’re here for the long haul, with the help of their daughter Nicola and son-in-law Dustin.
“Surf Parade is a fantastic property. As soon as I walked into the foyer I said, “This is it”. It had instant appeal and I held my breath until I got it. It was the size we were looking for, we wanted a really a large one. I love what I do; it’s a fantastic resort so it suits me ideal. We are definitely here for the long haul.”
