Local tourism boom: Promotions see Kalbarri holidays sell out

The region has seen positive signs for tourism recovery.

The Experience Kalbarri at Half Price promotion has seen holidays in the region sell out in just seven days.

While tourism operators in many Australian states are struggling with the effects of ongoing lockdowns, Western Australia has welcomed a local tourism boom, with residents flocking to book Kalbarri holidays.

Aiming to support local tourism businesses affected by Cyclone Seroja, the Experience Kalbarri at Half Price promotion was delivered through Tourism Western Australia with the support of the WA state government. The initiative has been a resounding success.

“Anecdotally, operators have reported families extending their stay in the town as a result of the half-price promotion and many others who booked several different tours and experiences, or hired equipment such as kayaks, to make the most of the discount, which is a boost for the area,” said WA Tourism Minister David Templeman.

The half-price promotional offer was launched only last week, providing local tourism discounts up to a total value of $50,000. The promotion aimed to encourage West Australian travellers to book tours and experiences at regional tourism businesses.

In just seven days, close to 1,000 people placed over 350 tourism bookings for scenic flights, boat cruises, fishing charters, canoeing tours and more. Demand was so high that experiences quickly sold out.

The Experience Kalbarri at Half Price promotion is one of several programs designed to support cyclone-affected businesses in the region, with additional Kalbarri tourism marketing initiatives also in progress.

Mr Templeman said: “I’d like to acknowledge the hard work of the Kalbarri Visitor Centre staff, who worked tirelessly during the week of the promotion to help achieve this fantastic result, and I encourage Western Australians to continue to explore this magnificent region.”

The local tourism boom is a positive sign for Kalbarri businesses as they recover from recent industry challenges and begin to welcome travellers back to regional holiday destinations.
