Sekisui House project approval urged

Sunshine Coast mayor Mark Jamieson and tourism boss Bill Darby are urging the council to agree to the billion-dollar high-rise Sekisui House proposal at Yaroomba, south of Coolum.

Mr Darby said, “Anyone who says that one 12-storey building is going to make us another Gold Coast, well that’s just scare-mongering, it’s parochial ignorance.”

A four-storey height limit for beachfront land at Yaroomba was ridiculous, the premier Campbell Newman has told state parliament.

The matter erupted in state parliament as Sunshine Coast councillors met in another closed session to consider plans by Japanese developer Sekisui House for a five-star resort, with at least one building of 12 storeys in height on a 20ha of beachfront land opposite Palmer Coolum Resort.

Council has yet to receive a formal application from the developer.

“They have an ambitious plan to develop offerings that are consistent with what we’ll need when we have an international airport,” Mr Jamieson said.

Sekisui has announced plans for 2300 apartments, 300 homes, a 450-room hotel and 35,000m² of retail space.
