Grocon’s Melbourne tower axed by Wynne

Victoria’s planning minister Richard Wynne has axed a $300 million proposal by developer Grocon to build a 46-level apartment tower close to Melbourne’s Parliament House and Treasury.

Mr Wynne said the proposed skyscraper at 85 Spring St would have badly affected the streets surrounding the Parliament and Treasury buildings.

Grocon paid $45 million for the Spring St building in 2013 and the tower was designed by architects Denton Corker Marshall would have included 300 apartments.

“The proposal by virtue of its inadequate setbacks and overall scale will result in poor daylight, outlook and ventilation to neighbouring dwellings,” Mr Wynne’s statement said. The building was too high for the site and had “poor architectural expression”, the minister said.
