Capital cashing in on casino and accommodation jobs bonanza

The multi-million-dollar redevelopment of Adelaide Casino has begun, creating an estimated 1000 jobs during construction and expected to deliver another 800 once completed.

The $330 million expansion by Auckland based Skycity Entertainment Group will add 123 luxury hotel rooms, new gaming areas, a rooftop bar and three additional signature restaurants.

Premier Steven Marshall said of the project: “Most importantly, it’s going to give us better infrastructure and better facilities to attract interstate and overseas visitors to South Australia.

“[The new hotel] will equal the best in Australia, if not be above it for this type of facility.”

Builder Hansen Yuncken undertook the first Adelaide Casino development in 1985.

The casino is now the city’s tenth largest employer and injects some $30 million into the State each year.

The development, scheduled for completion in 2020, is touted to deliver a world-class entertainment destination for South Australia.

Casino general manager Luke Walker told The Urban Developer: “The investment Skycity Entertainment Group is making in the Adelaide Casino expansion is a vote of confidence for the South Australian economy and we hope it will lead to further private investment in the state’s tourism sector.”

As part of the approval process, the Independent Gambling Authority stipulated the casino would need to “have systems in place to identify and prevent problem gamblers from accessing premium gaming areas”.

The casino expansion coincides with a major redevelopment of Adelaide Festival Plaza which will create 16,500sqm of public space around the Adelaide Festival Centre, Adelaide Railway Station, Adelaide Casino, Parliament House and Old Parliament House and Station Road.

The city’s airport is also undergoing a major revamp, with a $165 million upgrade of its international terminal, retail outlets and restaurants.
