The Sebel Resort Noosa

Cameron Jeffery’s appointment by Mirvac Hotels & Resorts as the new general manager of The Sebel Resort Noosa in July 2010, coincided with the resort’s tenth anniversary, which was celebrated in November.

Mr Jeffery, 36, moved from The Sebel Launceston in Tasmania where they recently celebrated their fifth birthday. With his multi-skilled background, including entertainment on a Disney cruise ship, organising parties is a breeze for Mr Jeffery.

“You couldn”t pick a better location in Australia. Everyone is here for the same reason —tourism. I love the atmosphere and the way everyone (businesses) here at Noosa, work together to provide a great guest experience for the whole town. That is unique,” said Mr Jeffery.

Any resort would hope that guests staying at their accommodation will kick back and relax and leave feeling better off after being there. That is exactly what the stylish Sebel Resort Noosa, conveniently located in the heart of the famous Hastings St, offers guests.

“We cater for all guest types but we are primarily a leisure destination. Most people get two to four weeks off a year, so we have to make sure they get an amazing escape from their day to day lives,” said Mr Jeffery.

Everything that a guest could want is easily accessible—including a pristine beach across the road; boutique shopping; galleries; restaurants and cafes. In the resort there is a stunning pool, children’s wading pool, barbeque and spa. A convenient playground is located in Lions Park behind the resort.

“I deliberately park my car at the other end of the resort so I can walk through it in the morning and night. That way I can keep an eye on what we offer our guests,” said Mr Jeffery. “I love walking through the resort at night time and observing guests enjoying the tranquillity of the artistically lit garden. There are guests relaxing in the gardens enjoying the peacefulness while others with their feet up on the balcony, looking out at the resort. It is a magical resort at night time.”

The Sebel Resort Noosa’s informative website gives guests an interesting list of inviting activities and tours to enjoy. For guests who want to wander around the proximity of the resort and Hastings St, there are plenty of retail delights and eateries on offer close by.

To ensure the tours, activities and restaurants recommended to guests are of a high quality, as is The Sebel Noosa Resort, staff often receive invitations from tour operators and restaurants to experience the products so staff will know what to recommend to guests.

The 38 staff happily employed at The Sebel Resort Noosa each has their specific role.

“They are a really good bunch of people to work with,” said Mr Jeffery. “It is equally important that staff have a good quality lifestyle and enjoy their work experiences too. Mirvac has a philosophy to develop the management and leadership and they offer a work culture where everyone contributes to the business.”

Mirvac prides itself on ensuring a high standard of accommodation and service and have strict adherence guidelines for occupational health and safety and perform regular audits and checks.

The Sebel Resort Noosa staff and guests can rest assured that they are truly in the hands of a good scout, Cameron Jeffery.

“I was involved with The Scout Association in South Australia from when I was eight years until I went out to the Disney cruise ship at 26. I was an assistant branch commissioner for eight to ten year old cub scouts,” said Mr Jeffery. “Honestly, if I didn’t go through the scouts I would not be where I am today. The scouting background has been a real asset in many ways. The scouts teach good life skills, good morals and strong work ethics.”

“It was because of the yearly scout performances where I was involved in the acting and singing that gave me the opportunity to apply for the Disney cruise ship,” said Mr Jeffery.

“Working on the cruise ship as the entertainment manager was my first hospitality job —straight out of my job as a bank loans manager to a mega 2000 plus guest ship with up to 800 children to entertain.”

“Something that was drilled into us on the ships, and I have followed through with it at The Sebel Resort Noosa, is to take a local interest in the guests. By that I mean when a guest says they are from somewhere specific, I discuss some general knowledge about the area the guest is from,” explained Mr Jeffery. “Taking a personal interest in the guest makes them feel special and is rewarding.”

As general manager, Mr Jeffery is responsible for all operational aspects of the resort.

From working as a bank loans manager; entertainment manager for international cruise liners; project management for the complete refurbishment of the cruise ship M/V Century based in Palermo Italy; revenue optimisation manager; food & beverage manager and general manager at Kings Canyon Resort and then to The Sebel Melbourne where he commenced his Mirvac career, Mr Jeffery has a broad range of experience to offer.

“You have to use your knowledge of the past to build your present and future,” said Mr Jeffery. “Everywhere I’ve worked I have learnt valuable lessons that impact on what I do today.

“Working in isolated resorts and cruise ships taught me that you really have to be strict with inventory control. Once the cruise ship left you couldn’t turn back for the forgotten milk. In the Northern Territory one interesting experience was when the egg supplier didn’t put the eggs on the truck in time so I had to drive a six hour return trip from Kings Canyon Resort to Alice Springs to collect 800 eggs and drive back along a rough dirt road with them in the back of my car.

“I am very happy with my career move to The Sebel Resort Noosa,” said Mr Jeffery who is the envy of his southern surfing brothers. “I will have to follow the family tradition and learn how to surf. My brothers are a bit jealous of me living at Noosa and I can’t surf yet.

“At The Sebel Resort Noosa it is very satisfying watching guests enjoy their holiday especially knowing we have contributed to creating a unique experience for them,” said Mr Jeffery.

Mirvac Hotels & Resort is a member of Global Hotel Alliance, the world’s largest alliance of independent hotel brands. GHA currently comprises over 260 premium and luxury hotels with 60,000 rooms across 47 different countries.
