Airbnb’s new Tiny Towns Guide showcases Australia’s hidden gems
The initiative also supports regional tourism by contributing five $30,000 grants to community organisations in these towns
Airbnb has launched a new initiative to put Australia’s most charming, yet lesser-known, small towns on the map with the release of their Tiny Towns Guide. This guide highlights 50 picturesque Aussie towns with populations under 3000, featuring top-rated Airbnb listings that cater to a variety of budgets.
The inspiration for this guide stems from research conducted by YouGov, revealing that nearly 80 percent of Australians are eager to explore a regional town they’ve never visited. However, one in three potential travellers are hesitant, assuming that accommodation options in these tiny towns may be subpar.

Airbnb’s new guide aims to dispel this misconception by showcasing the unique and quality stays available in these small communities.
From the rugged landscapes of Monto, Queensland, to the tranquil beaches of Scamander, Tasmania, the Tiny Towns Guide offers travellers a peek into Australia’s hidden treasures.
The guide’s top 10 tiny towns include:
- Maclean, NSW
- Scamander, TAS
- Monto, QLD
- York, WA
- Myrrhee, VIC
- Taranna, TAS
- Bremer Bay, WA
- Lake Bennett, NT
- Glen Alice, NSW
- Tumby Bay, SA
Interestingly, despite their beauty, 40 percent of Aussies have never heard of these top 10 towns. Maclean, NSW, is the most recognised, yet still unfamiliar to 74 percent of the population. Myrrhee, VIC, is the least known, with only 5 percent awareness among Australians.
Susan Wheeldon, Airbnb Country Manager for Australia and New Zealand, highlighted the benefits of exploring these towns, especially with the spring school holidays around the corner. “Airbnb’s Tiny Towns Guide makes finding your next holiday destination easy, offering options across Australia where travellers can enjoy quintessential regional hospitality,” she said.
The initiative also supports regional tourism by contributing five $30,000 grants to community organisations in these towns. The recipients include Scamander Surf Life Saving Club Inc., The York Festival, King Valley Arts Inc., Monto Museum of Art, and the Lower Clarence Scottish Association. These funds are intended to help these communities attract more tourists and foster local development.
For instance, Scamander’s Surf Life Saving Club will use the grant to maintain their rescue operations, ensuring visitors can safely enjoy the coastal beauty the town offers. Mayor Mick Tucker of Break O’Day Council praised the initiative, noting that Scamander’s surf breaks and fishing spots make it a special destination worth exploring.
Margy Osmond, CEO of the Tourism & Transport Forum Australia, commended Airbnb’s efforts. “There is nothing Aussies enjoy more than getting off the beaten track and making new discoveries, and this is a fantastic initiative from Airbnb to give these small country towns a boost,” she said.
For those looking to discover new destinations, Airbnb’s Tiny Towns Guide offers an array of opportunities to experience the unique charm and hospitality of Australia’s tiniest towns. Whether it’s a weekend road trip or an extended stay, these hidden gems are now just a booking away.
