Paradox Hotels & Resorts to launch first Australian flagship with Paradox Sydney

A bold new chapter begins as Paradox takes the helm of one of Sydney’s most iconic heritage properties.

Paradox Hotels & Resorts will make its Australian debut on July 1, 2025 with the rebranding of one of Sydney’s most storied hospitality landmarks, Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel. Paradox Sydney is set to introduce a fresh and vibrant vision to one of the city’s most iconic and historic addresses.

Owned by TA Global since 1997, the historic sandstone building located at 27 O’Connell Street marks Paradox’s first Australian location. Paradox Sydney joins a global portfolio of hotels in five countries including Canada, Singapore, China, Thailand, and now Australia, renowned for culturally inspired design, seamless service and experiences that capture the unique spirit of each city.

The heritage-listed building is no stranger to transformation, iconic for its eclectic past. Originally built in 1856 as the home of John Fairfax & Sons. It then served as the Bank of New South Wales, then WestPac Bank, before beginning its life in hospitality as the five-star Radisson Blu Plaza Hotel in 2000. The property has evolved through multiple chapters and is now entering a new era as Paradox Sydney.

“Paradox is about creating places with soul—hotels that are deeply connected to the people, culture and pulse of the city,” said Tiah Joo Kim, CEO of TA Global and the visionary behind the Paradox brand.

A graduate of Sydney’s Macquarie University, Tiah brings a personal connection to the city, making Sydney a fitting milestone for Paradox’s global growth.

“To debut in Australia at such a historic and meaningful heritage address is a major milestone for us. We look forward to bringing our signature blend of culture, creativity, and authentic hospitality to this vibrant city.”

Peter Tudehope, General Manager of Paradox Sydney, said the change reflects a future-forward approach to luxury hospitality in the city.

“Since 1856, this landmark building has been shaped by three great custodians: The Sydney Morning Herald, the Bank of New South Wales and Radisson Blu. Each has contributed to its remarkable story. Today, as Paradox takes the helm, we are excited to write the next vibrant chapter that celebrates its heritage while forging a fresh and inspiring future.”

Following a $13.5 million refurbishment in 2015, Paradox Sydney remains committed to delivering exceptional service, award-winning dining and luxurious accommodation that have long defined the hotel. The property features 364 rooms and suites, state-of-the-art meeting and conference facilities, a wellness centre and a refined restaurant and bar offering, all housed within the building’s stately sandstone façade and contemporary interiors.

In the coming months, the property will be gradually refreshed to embody the Paradox brand and meet modern guest expectations. The hotel will remain fully operational throughout the transition, ensuring a seamless and uninterrupted experience for all guests.
