Rocks boutique shelved by red tape

Sydney-based hoteliers James and Hayley Baillie have revealed on Channel 9’s Financial Review Sunday program that they have pulled out of their much-anticipated new hotel in Sydney’s historic Rocks area.

“We walked away from the Rocks,” James Baillie said. “It was economically unsustainable: the cost of construction and the bureaucracy within the City of Sydney just got so big that we couldn’t make it stack up with the number of rooms we have.”

The Baillies, who manage Uluru’s Longitude 131° and Kangaroo Island’s Southern Ocean Lodge, had been planning an exclusive 10-room boutique hotel in the Rocks to be called Baillie Lodge.

Mr Baillie confirmed he believed there was still “an opening for an intimate luxury hotel” in Sydney – and the pair are already scouting new sites.
