Council loses in Melbourne apartment case
Stonnington Council’s appeal against plans Lend Lease’s construction of 19 apartment towers in the Armadale suburb of Melbourne has been dismissed by the Victorian Supreme Court.
The council had initially refused permission for the 12-storey complex comprising 448 apartments and 18 townhouses but its decision was overturned by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal last year. Stonnington Council appealed to the Supreme Court backed up by more than 600 objections.
Justice Karin Emerton said, “No weight could be given to the raw number of objections if the number of objections was not capable of evidencing a significant social effect,”
Ben Coughlan, state manager of Lend Lease apartments, said, “As Melbourne’s population continues to grow, there is a need to provide innovative solutions to housing and employment opportunities, better public spaces and sustainable communities.”
