Two more art hotels on the way

Asian Pacific Group is to build a $260 million Art Series Hotel at Box Hill in Melbourne and also plans another hotel on a Brisbane heritage river site.

The Box Hill hotel will be named after Chinese-Australian artist Zhong Chen, who was born in China but arrived in Australia aged 19 in 1989. It will consist of two towers with a total of 650 units that will be divided between apartments and hotel rooms. Melbourne architects Peddle Thorp will design the complex.

APG is part of a consortium with Adam Flaskas, the co-founder of CorporateRealEstate.com that won the right to redevelop the historic Howard Smith Wharves, a 4ha site under Brisbane’s landmark Story Bridge where it will build a 140-room hotel.

APG chief executive William Deague said, “The company’s first project in Brisbane, which will be built on the Spring Hill site bought from the state government in March for $23 million, will also include an Art Series Hotel. It will be called The Johnson, named after Sydney artist Michael Johnson. The $155 million complex will consist of about 180 residential apartments and 100 hotel rooms.”

Construction has also begun on another APG project, the Vue in Adelaide, a 207-apartment tower that will be the tallest residential tower in South Australia.
